City & Guilds withdrawing from South Africa
In response to regulatory changes and requirements in England, City & Guilds will be withdrawing all chef and hospitality qualifications out of South Africa by 31st March 2020. This means that the the last intake for any City & Guilds chef and hospitality qualification will be that of February 2019 throughout South Africa.
Due to recent changes within the Academic field of South Africa, and more particularly that of Private Colleges offering vocational training, the Department of Higher Education (DHET) alongside the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) and the Quality Council of Trades and Occupations (QCTO) has set out to ensure the alignment and recognition of culinary qualifications within South Africa. This brought to light the QCTO accreditation which has become compulsory for Private Colleges offering any formal type of chef qualifications.
Currently the UK based accreditation body who complies with the requirements as laid down by the Department of Higher Education and SAQA, is the Confederation of Tourism and Hospitality (CTH) and the Chartered Institute of Tourism and Hospitality (ITHSA). The ITHSA is the South African office for the CTH. More information can be found on CTH’s website.
Chefs Training & Innovation Academy is in the process of converting all Campuses to offer the current dual certification between QCTO and the CTH/ITHSA, and current programmes of study will be aligned with qualifications to the current equivalent. This roll-out starting with our brand new Stellenbosch campus as early as July 2018, thereafter the Centurion and Durban Campus will follow in mid 2019. CTIA is prepared for this change and strive to prescribe to South African compliance whilst still providing the best possible training opportunities for our students on both national and international level. The CTH qualifications are more in-depth which is in line with CTIA’s vision and mission and students will have a better education and more opportunities internationally. One of the CTH programmes were developed by Gordon Ramsay together with his Tante Marie Academy. CTIA strives to strengthen our academics in order to better equip our students.
